Get Congregation Volunteers “On Board”

Getting members excited about its new building project, the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Hemet, Calif., congregation called volunteers “all aboard” with WooHoo Whistles (they sound like a train whistle). Prince of Peace hosted the first-ever LCEF Thousand-Fold Workshop this summer to help motivate volunteer support for ministries. With a loan from the California-Nevada-Hawaii CEF, they are building a new family life center and asked Laborers For Christ to manage the project.

Unexpected Damage Taken Care of by Laborers

In late May, a tornado came through Laramie, Wyo., coming close to the St. Andrew Lutheran Church’s parsonage, totaling the roof, damaging the siding, and destroying the fence around the yard. Plans were already in place to update the church and parsonage using a Laborers For Christ crew, but these were some added tasks. The district was able to save over $5,000 by using Laborers to manage the project. And with the help of students and other volunteers the parsonage repairs were completed in three short weeks! St. Andrew is a campus mission, providing a church home to University of Wyoming students.

Growing Alongside the Community

Integrating small-group ministry as part of its outeach is one goal Trinity Lutheran Church, Richmond, Va., has in mind for its renovation and expansion plan. The congregation is currently constructing a 16,000-square-foot addition as well as renovating its current ministry space to house classrooms, an administrative wing, and a large multi-purpose room. The congregation came to LCEF for a low-cost loan to finance the project and reach more in this fast-growing community.

New Wings for Minnesota Church Beckon New Members

Trinity Lutheran Church, Sauk Rapids, Minn., is adding more than 7,700 square feet of space. But Ron Eickhoff stresses that the two new wings are meant to beckon people beyond the current membership as the fast-growing congregation is adding about 75 members a year. The Trinity congregation has enlisted the help of Laborers For Christ to construct the new structures. Eickhoff said they are “outstanding examples of Christian workers. We love having them here.”

Providing Architectural Advice to LCMS Organizations

Don Amt likes figuring out the "puzzles" LCMS organizations face when repairing or constructing a building. He sees potential where others do not. Amt is a member of the Architectural Advisory Committee, a unique ministry of Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) that brings together volunteer Lutheran architects and liturgical advisors.

The most common puzzle to be solved: finding a balance between functionality and costs. That's where the members of the Advisory Committee can make the most impact.

Called Workers, Laborers For Christ Work Together on Kansas Retreat Center

When Laborers for Christ works on building a church, they count on the volunteers from that church to help in the building process. When Laborers for Christ (LFC) began work on the Kansas District Retreat Center in Herington, Kan., they had no congregational base from which to draw volunteers. But Garry Niehoff, planned giving counselor for the Kansas district and retreat committee chairperson, came up with a solution: ask the people for whom it is primarily intended to volunteer. Area churches have also provided support to the project.

Do Your Meetings Need Focus?

LCEF’s Stategic Ministry Planning can bring efficiency to you. Does your church, school or agency spend time considering questions about land, facilities, staffing, programs, or money without a unified foundation for decision-making? See your leaders work more efficiently without stress or burnout and your boards and committees become more focused-with shorter, more productive meetings.

LCEF's Strategic Ministry Planning (SMP) helps your organization make decisions based on God's priorities for you and your ministry.
